I ended 2022 on a high note. I began seriously make a series of changes to my health.  In September I joined a 4 Week Fat Loss Challenge with Dreambody Coach, Brandon. I needed accountability from another professional.

I have been on a wellness journey for a long while. It started with me trying to figure out the best way to end my eczema flare-ups and have regular healthy and pain-free menstrual cycles. I can declare confidently, my eczema cleared up and my cycle has been regular since my late 20s. I’m 39 today!

However, motherhood comes with a whole lot of ish. Postpartum depression, and sleepless nights, contribute to hormonal imbalances and weight gain. As a clinical nutritionist and health coach, I have many tools in my tools box. So, you would think it would be easy. Some days I am so tired and lack motivation. But with every day, there’s room for improvement.

So, I started to change my habits, Instead of not exercising, I started doing 15 minutes of resistance training and 10 minutes of cardio. And with every day, I increased the time by 5 minutes. Now, I am active 4-6 days per week.

My eating habits were not so great either. I now make it my intention to drink 1 green juice and 2 salads every day. As increasing vegetables help to naturally detox estrogen from the body.

Working on my sleep habits has been a major wellness breakthrough. Intentionally being active during the day, has drastically improved my sleep!

To replenish the cells and you must clean your bloodstream. It is essential to Parasites in the body can also cause eczema problems.

Ointments and creams may ease the rash topically, but the effects are not long-term since they don’t address the root cause of the issue. According to herbalists, any kind of skin disorder is the body’s way to remove impurities from the blood. Hence, it is important to support detoxification and purify the blood.

One method that has helped me to keep my skin improving is having a daily dose of is by using herbs.

Herbs like Rosehips and Hibiscus may help.

    1. Rose Hips: Helps regenerate skin cells. Rose hips are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants that help boost the immune system. It is a mild diuretic. It is used to improve kidney disorders and mild constipation. It can be used topically to help regenerate new skin cells. As a toner, it helps rehydrate the skin locking in moisture. It’s high in vitamin A, which is referred to as the “skin vitamin”.

    1. Hibiscus: This tart mildly sweet herb helps to clear heat out of the body to heal and cool the skin. It helps to detoxify the blood and also lowers blood pressure and cholesterol. It is very effective as a natural treatment for skin conditions such as dandruff and eczema. Hibiscus leaves are packed with antioxidants and high in vitamin C.

Do you know that your menstruation is a reflection of overall health?

You can tell a lot about your health by the quality of your flow. The leading health experts are calling a vital sign. Some common issues are irregularities and heavy periods.

Why irregular periods are so common?

Irregular periods are very common. There are many reasons for having an irregular flow. It can be due to a simple food allergy or sensitivity such as wheat, dairy, soy, egg. For example, the inflammatory reaction to wheat/gluten may lead to iron deficiency causing irregularities. Excessive weight gain or weight loss and stress can cause a shift in hormonal balance that alters the flow pattern. Polycystic ovary syndrome, uterine abnormalities- endometriosis, cysts, fibroid, thyroid also lead to irregular periods as well.

    What about heavy periods?

Heavy menstrual loss is one of the most common gynecological problems. With the loss of 80 ml or more of blood per cycle. Excessive menstrual blood loss is also known as Menorrhagia. This type of condition may last longer than 7 days and interferes with your physical, emotional, social quality of life.

Menorrhagia abnormalities are due to hormonal issues such as anovulation (when the ovaries did not release an oocyte during a menstrual cycle. YOU DID NOT OVULATE), hypothyroidism, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, luteal phase defects, atopic pregnancy, uterine Polyps/Fibroids or Clotting abnormalities due to vitamin K deficiency or coagulation defects.

Chronic Stress may also cause heavy periods. When you are in the state of stress, all the time.

It is important to evaluate teenagers for vonWillebrand’s Disease (vWD), a bleeding disorder in which heavy menstrual bleeding is a common clinical manifestation. This test for severe menstrual bleeding is recommended by American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

  •  We are born with the innate ability to fight off foreign invaders, infections. Chronic Inflammation is one of the major factors in all types of period problems.

    What is inflammation?

Inflammation is a series of events that occurs when you sprain your ankle or have an infection. The normal, familiar signs of inflammation are redness, pain, swelling, fever. These are the first signs our immune system is in combat mode.  Note, the natural acute inflammatory response is the body’s way to initiate healing. The last sign is lost of function, this stage leads to chronic inflammation. Chronic activation of the inflammatory response takes a heavy toll on the body. It is the root cause of all diseases.

How does inflammation impact your health and menstrual cycle?

For conception to occur the female immune system must provide a conducive environment for the sperm and egg. Chronic inflammation can impair sperm motility and make the uterine environment more unfit to implantation.  The reproductive tract uses inflammatory signals such as cytokines to coordinate ovulation and implantation.  Chronic inflammation can lead to no ovulation and low conception. Premenstrual symptoms are due to elevated levels of inflammation. This is seen by testing for levels of high sensitive-C reactive protein (hs-CRP). Elevated levels also are associated with heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, migraines, high cholesterol, arthritis.

Food that can contribute to chronic inflammation

Foods that lead to chronic inflammation are frequent use of alcohol, dairy products, wheat, gluten, vegetable oil, sugar, and proceeded foods. Reducing inflammation is a vital step toward having the body eliminate period problems and insulin resistance.

    Having uncontrolled sugar cravings?

You’ve tried all the fad diets but can’t seem to curb your sugar addiction. You’ve also heard that one too many times how bad sugar is. So, why do we love and seek out sweet foods?

Long ago, our ancestors consumed fewer processed foods forms of sugar than we do now. Back then, only sweet natural foods were available. Our ancestors did not consume refined sugary foods as we do now.

We constantly seek out sweet foods due to the effects of dopamine.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that delivers signals to and from the brain. It helps control the feelings of reward and pleasure. That feeling you get a good exercise, that’s due to the release of dopamine. Dopamine is also released in response to the consumption of caffeine, drugs, and sugar.

When you eat sugar from bad carbohydrates and added sugar, signals the release of dopamine throughout your body and motivates you to seek out that pleasurable feeling.

Why we don’t that same feeling from eating, berries? When you eat foods like berries, apples, these foods are nutrient-dense and they provide enough, nutrients that stimulate the pleasure-seeking feeling and calm the desire to eat more. In other words, you would satisfy the sweet taste without being hit with a craving.

Remember, that refined forms of sugar will rob your nutrient stores and create a desire to eat more sugar. Eating more sugar will increase your blood sugar levels and cause all kinds of health issues like, infertiliy, skin rashes, painful periods, PCOS, PMS, acne, depression, anxiety, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and fatigue.

One way proven way to curb your sugar cravings is to DETOX!

Corn, also known as maize is a very popular whole grain. It is very important that you understand its effect on diabetes and when is the best time to consume corn.

    When to Eat Corn?

The ideal time to eat corn is when the body’s demand for energy is at its peak. Those times are during breakfast and lunch. That way your body has enough time to digest and use up the energy (carbohydrates) released by the corn.  Being active helps to use up carbohydrates.

    Is Corn High in Sugar?

As mentioned earlier, corn is rich in carbohydrates and natural sugars. It has a high glycemic index and moderate glycemic load. However, it does not have a negative impact on blood sugar. The dietary fiber

and proteins in corn do not allow it to break down immediately into simple sugars. This makes it suitable for people with pre-diabetes and diabetes. [2]

    More About The Recipe

In this Corn and Herb recipe, I wanted to add some herbs and spices for blood sugar management and digestive health. I added turmeric and parsley for added nutrients.

The Herbs and Spices Health Benefits

Parsley is rich in flavonoids that may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease (4,5). People with blood sugar issues may experience vision impairment. Parsley is rich in nutrients. Vitamin A, is an essential nutrient for eye health. It helps protect the cornea (6).

Two other important nutrients for healthy eyes and vision are lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein and zeaxanthin may help to reduce age-related macula disorder (AMD) (7).

If you have been on social media lately, you may have come across various controversial posts about plantains and why it is not suitable for people with prediabetes and diabetes.

Also, many keto or low carb Apps always flag plantains and many other cultural foods as “high carb” food. Which makes you believe that all your culture’s foods are unhealthy.

    Are plantains healthy?

Plantains are a staple food in the Caribbean, Africa, and many other cultures around the world. Plantains have a rich history, with references to the fruit dating back 2,500 years ago.

Studies show that plantains help boost the immune system, regulate digestion, and are rich in potassium.

    Plantain Nutritional Facts

Plantains are typically eaten when cooked, which changes the fruit’s nutritional value.

One cup (about 200 grams) of cooked, mashed plantains has approximately:

    232 calories

    62.3 grams carbohydrates

    2 grams protein

    0.4-gram fat

    3 – 5 grams fiber

    1,818 international units vitamin A (36 percent)

    21.8 milligrams vitamin C (36 percent)

    930 milligrams potassium (27 percent)

    0.5 milligram vitamin B6 (24 percent)

    64 milligrams magnesium (16 percent)

52 micrograms folate (13 percent DV)

1.5 milligrams niacin (8 percent DV)

    The Health Benefits of Plantain

Plantains are whole, natural foods. As stated above they are rich in vitamins, fiber, potassium, and antioxidant. They are high in complex carbohydrates and are easily digestible. Continue reading to learn the benefits they offer. (1)

    May lower blood pressure

Plantains are a great source of potassium. Potassium is useful in ensuring proper muscular functioning. (2)

    Helps Control Blood Sugar

Plantains are high in resistant starch. Resistant starch is a type of carbohydrate that does not get digested in your small intestine. Instead, it ferments in your large intestine and feeds good gut bacteria.

The resistant starch doesn’t raise blood sugar levels. This slows down digestion, promotes fullness, and improves good gut bacteria. Just like other fibers,  resistant starch in plantains promotes glycemic control. (3)

There are many more benefits of resistant starch such. (3)

    Prevent Iron-Deficiency Anemia

Plantains contain both iron and vitamin C. Together these two micronutrients work together to enhance the absorption of iron. The plant source of iron comes in heme form, which is not easily absorbed. Because vitamin C is present in plantains, this makes iron more bioavailability.

Iron-deficiency anemia causes fatigue, difficulty concentrating, impaired immunity, and poor regulation of body temperature. Plantains can help you avoid this common condition. (4)

    Boosts Immunity

Plantains provide vitamin C that helps boost the immune system. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to fight off infection and disease.

    May Help to Reduce Inflammation

Plantains are a natural whole food. Inflammation is a natural process that helps the body to heal, but too much long-term inflammation leads to many chronic diseases.

When Should You be Careful with Eating Plantains?

There are some situations when you should be careful with plantains.

How to Best Eat Plantains for Better Blood Glucose

Plantains are versatile. Unripe, green plantains can be used in different ways and can substitute for potatoes in any dish. Due to its high level of carbohydrates compared to protein, it is best to pair plantains with protein, healthy fat options for balanced blood glucose.

The 3 Steps Guide to balance blood glucose and losing weight without a restrictive diet: What You Should Know

Going on a restrictive diet, battling excessive weight can be one of the most challenging, emotional, and frustrating, and confusing experiences one can go through. Most people are in a never-ending struggle to lose weight. They are trying diet after diet. Despite, the numerous diets, miracle pills, and time-restrictive eating patterns, people continue to get gain more weight.

If dieting works why are so many people struggling with blood glucose issues?

When you go on a diet: (a specific way of eating for a short period), after “getting off” the diet, you will gain that weight back and more. If you have been on one or a few diets and still struggling with your blood sugar levels and weight, now is the time to throw the “I am going on dieting” idea out the window. The cycle of going on a diet, implies, that at some time shortly, you will be “off the diet”. And that’s the problem.

You were advised to lose weight to lower your blood glucose level. You’re on this diet for 6 months, one year, and still no change. High blood sugar in the blood triggers an increased amount of the hormone insulin circulating in the bloodstream.

Just as losing weight, balancing your blood glucose levels involves a total lifestyle change! Think about it, what are the habits you are currently doing that keep you where you are?

Lifestyle changes are behaviors or habit modifications that encourage a positive change in your life. Lifestyle change habits such as sleep patterns, levels of physical activity, stress management, and eating tendencies can drastically improve your health for balanced blood glucose and weight loss.

3 Habits That Make Us Hormonally Imbalanced

Imagine exercising daily, avoiding carbs, and counting your calories only to have your belly fat grow bigger. It is very frustrating that you were told that by losing weight, your blood glucose would improve. If you are not getting the results from diet and exercise, your hormones are more likely the reason for you being unsuccessful.

    Habit #1: So Much Stress

Many studies have shown time and time again that stress causes abdominal fat, even in people who slander people. The stress hormone, cortisol is elevated during times of long-term stressors.

Stress does not cause diabetes. However, high cortisol levels caused by stress impact blood glucose, eating habits, and weight gain. Stress encourages the body to accumulate fat, disrupts how insulin functions, and results in more insulin flowing in the blood. [1] The intense sugar cravings, feeling tired after eating carbs, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), are all symptoms of insulin sensitivity declining.

Habit #2: Poor Nutrition Uptake, Poor Digestion

The digestive system is responsible for the production of a large portion of our hormones. Taking control of your stress will improve your sleep and digestion. How’s your gut flora?  Your digestive health has a significant impact on your hormonal balance. If the health of the digestive system isn’t optimal, hormones become unbalanced. For example, the gut is responsible for regulating estrogen. Poor gut health increases the risk of estrogen-dominance disorders such as insulin resistance and PCOS. In my weekly cooking classes, I share tips on how to improve your gut.

Habit #3: Yo-yo Dieting and Longterm Excessive Calorie Restriction

Yo-yo dieting also referred to as weight cycling, is a pattern of losing weight and gaining it back again.

The on-and-off excessive calorie restriction: that’s eating high amounts, then lower amounts of food, puts the body in stress mode. This eating tendency spike stresses hormones and makes you want to eat and eat….and eat some more, which is dangerous, not only for your waistline but for overall health. The cycle of losing and gaining weight is linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, and altered immune function.

Please note that some yo-yo dieters are likely to gain more weight than they lost because losing weight causes the body to increase appetite and cling to its energy storage.

Weight loss diets are usually low in calories that result in muscle mass loss. [2] Include exercise and quality protein to reduce your muscle mass loss.

A yo-yo dieter is likely to regain more belly fat, when off the diet. Belly fat leads to diabetes. Studies have shown that yo-yo dieting increases your chances of developing type 2 diabetes.[3]

3 Tips To Balanced Blood Glucose and Weight Loss Without Dieting That Actually Works!

    Tip #1: Balancing Hormones

Imbalanced hormones don’t happen overnight. Your daily habits can set your hormones on the right or wrong path. How you handle day-to-day stress. One night of inadequate sleep can affect your eating habits, which can create imbalanced blood glucose levels that spiral into days or weeks of junk eating.

You can balance your hormones to experience stable blood sugar levels, weight loss, regular and pain-free menstrual cycles, protect your fertility, slow aging, and smooth easily into menopause.

Tip #2: Improve Your Gut Health

The foods we eat have an effect on our gut and blood glucose balance. If we eat food that our gut isn’t a fan of, it will negatively impact how the gut functions.

A recent study shows that an unhealthy gut leads to impaired glucose tolerance and can increase the likelihood of insulin resistance. Taking care of your gut is extremely important. And the same foods you eat for good gut health will also be good for balancing glucose levels.

    Tip #3: Power Your Nutrition

A meal plan with whole-natural foods will help to balance glucose levels and improve gut function. Because we are living in a processed food world, people with Prediabetes and diabetes can easily fall into the trap of highly processed additives foods that negatively influence their blood glucose health. Our Caribbean natural food choices are abundant!

What foods spike blood glucose and inhibit gut health?

Highly processed foods made with simple added sugars can cause a glucose spike when eaten alone, without protein, fats, or fiber. Some of these foods are honey, sweetened beverages, and high carbohydrates foods without fiber.

What influence the spike from these types of food comes from their fiber-to-sugar ratio. Researchers recommend the 10:1 ratio of carbohydrates to fiber. For every 10 grams of carbohydrates, a food has, it should have at least 1 gram of fiber. Also, the quantity of food indicates a blood glucose spike. So portion control is important!

3 Ways to Improve Gut Health for Blood Glucose Balance

    In Conclusion

Be sure to get to bed early, prioritize your rest, treat your gut with love; eat prebiotics- and probiotics foods. Skip that afternoon coffee or caffeinated energy drinks. Get proper sleep, your body will thank you.

Sugar addiction is real. Many of us have trouble resisting the urge for a sweet treat or high-carbohydrate foods. Eating lots of sugar is a surefire way to raise your risk of many health problems. Having unstable blood sugar levels will always lead to hormonal imbalances, creating havoc in the body.

Nutrition Tip: Add fruits to water. This makes a great alternative to soda or sweetened beverages.
